Explore the common and universal problem of worry; point out the causes of worry and the debilitating effects; present a God given solution for worry.

Text: Philippians 4:4-9

Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say Rejoice … Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true … honest … just … pure … lovely … of good report, if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, DO: and the peace of God shall be with you.

Introduction:

In October of 1983 TIME Magazine celebrated its sixtieth anniversary with a special edition. On page five they described the social conditions that existed when they started printing and compared them to the present day social norms. The article was titled The Atom Was Split, And So Were Most Marriages. In two short phrases they captured the main characteristic of society as it then existed.

“The atom was split.” Who could have ever conceived the tremendous scientific achievements that were to be made in six short decades? With each succeeding decade, technological advances have leapfrogged beyond our wildest imagination. Today we have enough explosive power to destroy earth’s entire civilization many times over. We can fly from continent to continent at supersonic speeds; talk to friends and colleagues anywhere in the world in full color live time; store enormous amounts of data in a small space and fly off into space at seventeen thousand five hundred miles an hour. We can see inside the human body and replace defective organs with used spare parts. This is only the beginning of the full story. Listen to God’s testimony regarding the achievements made during the days of Babel; And the Lord said, Behold … this they began to do (build the tower of Babel): and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. (Gen. 11:6) Babel’s achievements were miniscule when compared to current technology.

“The atom was split and so were most marriages.” Who would have ever conceived of the overwhelming social decay that has occurred since the article was printed? The breakup of the home is the leading contributing factor for anxiety, fear, worry, stress and maladaptive behavior. The same article went on to state that stresses in subsequent marriages are three to ten times greater. Worry is the hallmark of this present generation.

Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed … all these things shall be added unto you. – Matthew 6:31-33
